Objective: This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of Patikan kebo extract on NF-kB expression and inflammation of the airways in mice model of allergic asthma.
Methods: Male Balb/C mice were sensitized and challenged intraperitoneally (i.p) with ovalbumin (OVA). Mice were immunized i.p. on days 1 and 14 with 2.5 mg of OVA adsorbed to 7.75 ml of Aluminium hydroxide gel. OVA challenges (10 mg OVA in l ml of PBS) were administered aerosolly on days 21, 23, 25 and 27. Kruskal- Wallis test for the airway inflammation, One-way Anova for NF-kB expression and values of p < 0.05 were used to determine significant differences.
Results: OVA showed significantly increase NF-kB expression (16.3±3.2 vs 10.4±1.3, p =0.000) and airway inflammation (p =0.004) compared to control. Patikan kebo extract dose 500 mg/kgbw showed significantly decrease NF-kB expression (13.6±1.9 vs 16.3±3.2, p =0.014), but no significantly decrease airway inflammation (p =0.162) compared to OVA group. Patikan kebo extract dose 1,000 mg/kgbw showed significantly decrease NF-kB expression (13.3±2.2 vs 16.3±3.2, p =0.006) and airway inflammation (p =0.041) compared to OVA group.
Conclusion: This study concludes that Patikan kebo extract can decrease NF-kB expression and inflammation of the airways in mice model of of allergic asthma.
