Objective: This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of ethanol extract of Plantago major L. herbal to blood glucose, C-reactive Protein (CRP) and Malondihaldehide (MDA) levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice.
Methods: Diabetes was induced by a double intraperitoneal (i.p) injection of streptozotocin (65 mg/kg body weight) freshly dissolved in 0.02 M citrate saline buffer. Only rats with blood glucose levels ≥200 mg/dL were included. Animals were sacrificed after 2 weeks of diabetes. The diabetes was confirmed by measuring the level of blood glucose, using a Blood Glucose Test Meter (Gluco Dr™), while CRP and MDA using Elisa kit. Significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results: Plantago major L. herbal showed significantly decrease the level of blood glucose (-70.2±32.1 mg/dL). P. pelucida showed no significantly decrease the level of CRP (22.67±7.11 ng/mL, p =0.521) compared to DM group (20.78±8.75 ng/mL). P. pelucida showed no significantly decrease the level of MDA (0.490±0.061 uMol/L, p =0.529) compared to DM group (0.443±0.172 uMol/L).
Conclusion: This study concludes that P. pelucida can decrease the level of blood glucose, while can’t decrease CRP and MDA level in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice.
